THE 18th ANNUAL SURF ART BLOG 2022
I went surfing on my 71st birthday last week and I had the best session. I surfed the wall alone from 7:00AM to 9:00AM. It was so pretty. The water was a bit on the cold side (I was wearing just my trunks and 2mil sleeves) but it was easily thigh high, with the occasional waist plus. As I was surfing I kept looking down at Boar’s Head, and I tried to imagine what it would look like without the homes on top of the bluff. And that’s how this wave painting was conceptualized. I thought it would be a cool submission to my annual Surf Art Blog. I’m calling it, Abenaki Rights in the year 1531.
Again, using my active imagination and because it's art, I can pretend that Boar's Head would look like this in the year 1531. Besides, the only humans on the seacoast were the native Americans. In the case of Hampton, NH it more than likely would have been the ABENAKI Tribe. And let's face it, there have always been waves on Planet Earth. So try and use your imagination and imagine what North Beach would have looked like the summer of 1531. You see what I did there? Well of course you did.
The Annual Surf Art Blog is all about imagination.
OK I admit it. I look forward to this annual Surf Art Blog for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I am a huge fan of surf art and have been since I was a kid and I saw my first Rick Griffin Surf Cartoon in the early 60’s. His “Murphy” cartoons were a huge influence on me. As were R. Crumb’s cartoons and ZAP Comix. I guess I’ve always liked those detailed pen and ink cartoons. Though, Crumb’s work was a little out there and not really surf related. I suppose I was more influenced by Griffin.
His paintings of surf movies and surf movie posters were second to none. If you get a chance watch the video I posted of him at the top of this page. And if you look closely at this piece (above), you'll notice that he drew the waves at Ma'alaea (Freight Trains) is the same Ma'alaea that was getting blown up all over social media last week. This piece above was done in 1974.
Rick Griffin was an incredible artist. And it's no secret that I have been heavily influenced by his work, especially his detailed pen and ink style cartoons. I loved all of Griffin's work.
Case in point. I did this series of cartoons about 5-6 years ago. Clearly you can see the Griffin influence. His original Murphy cartoons were all about making us laugh. Hey, if we can't laugh at ourselves, we need to chill. It's all in good fun. Griffin also did a number of 60’s Rock posters too. And each one was an instant classic. Hendrix, Cream, and the Grateful Dead to name a few.
But besides my own personal love of Rick Griffin and other internationally known surf artists like Bill Odgen, Phil Roberts, and some of the new surf artists like, Hilton Alves and Wade Koniakowsky. I am really into seeing some of the local surf artists. I mean it. I love seeing the art that some of the local homegrown talent that we have around here produce some really cool and interesting pieces of surf art. In short, I genuinely like to promote the work of the local surf art community. There’s just so many talented surf artists here in New England. It’s true.
From Hannah Vokey and her incredible vault of surf art (is there anyone who has painted more surf art than Hannah these last 10 plus years?), to Stan Chew and his truly unique blend of Surf Art that has covered decades worth of great surf art.
This is Stan's latest piece.
Title: HEAVY WATER oil with varnish glaze technique. Boy that does look heavy too. There are so many talented surf artists that it would be difficult to name them on all, let alone write about each one. But I want to point out a few here.
Daniella Tabor has submitted a handful of pieces this year that I really like. Like myself, she works mostly in acrylic and her fun looking surf art is easy recognizable. This one is called “Sunrise Surf” 30”x24 acrylic on canvas. She’s had her art on the walls of Las Olas for as long as I remember. I really love her style. Be sure to check out her gallery down below.
Sarah Gozzo is a new comer to the Surf Art Blog this year and her work is really cool. She uses resin and pigment on bamboo. Her resin Instagram account is @princesspouch.com Her website is www.princesspouch.com
There are several more artists I’d like to highlight here.
Randall Rosenthal is perhaps the most interesting artist featured in this year's annual Surf art Blog because of his unique medium. Some of his work is all carved from a block of wood. This piece above? Yeah that's a block of wood. Every time I see his work I am blown away by it. The incredible detail that goes into these wood carvings is just mind blowing.
Alan Casagrande Bongo Bay Studios in California is an artist that a good friend of mine Jeff Chamberlain turned me onto a few years ago. His art is mostly done with watercolors and they are always fun to look at because he has so much going on in each of his pieces. When you see his art you’ll know exactly of what I’m talking about. Ironically, this one is called: "The Chamberlain's on vacation." Classic.
Phill Munson’s work is done with a sock. Yes you read that correctly. A sock. Don’t know how or why that came about, but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t wear the socks he paints with. One of his pieces is a really cool looking POV painting with dark colors that the moment I saw it, I liked it.
Two other local New England Surf Artists I want to mention is David Stowell and Jack Bitney. They both have galleries
that you should check out.
Here's one of David's pieces.
He calls it FIN WAVE. Pretty cool concept huh? You do see the fins right?
Here's one of Jack's Pieces, he calls this Watercolor-Mulcoy in Alaska
You all know that art is in the eye of the beholder. What one person likes is
not necessarily what you might like. It’s like any creative medium. From photography to sculpting, to drawing and painting. That’s why I enjoy these annual Surf Art Blogs. I love seeing what these talented artists have come
up with each new year. These artists work hard on their art. Show them the love they deserve.
I will post the contact info for each artist but if you can’t contact them directly, just contact me and I will put you in touch with one of these creative forces.
I really hope you enjoy this 18th Annual Surf Art Blog.

KSM Photoshop of the Week
These annual Surf Art Blogs are not lost on the Sheik. In fact, one of his cell mates is pretty good in doing caricatures. Al Jahshan (the two donkeys) likes to draw caricatures of the Sheik. He did this for the surf art Blog. He called it KHALIDDY KILLING IT. But according to the authorities at GITMO The Sheik was insulted by this rendition and had the donkey's drawing hand crushed by two large stones. I was able to get a copy of the drawing for your viewing pleasure. I would ask that you please not forward this to anyone else for fear of upsetting the Sheik even more then already is. Besides, I need my drawing hand.
And so my friends, please take advantage of this weekly photo shop of the mastermind who planned 9-11 and resulted in the deaths of 3,000 innocent civilians by KSM (Khalid Sheik Mohammed).

Yesterday- The Surf Doodle. 50 Years ago this summer. .
(Below) Back in 1972 I was a sophomore in Art School. The ART INSTITUTE OF BOSTON. They had us carry around these little black books with blank white pages. They wanted us to draw constantly. They literally encourage doodling. well, as a lifelong doodler and a surfer since 1964 it was a no brainer on what I would be doodling. Though at the time, my imagination was running a muck. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I did this doodle. I know I was thinking somewhat about surfing. But everything else was a blur. Keep in mind I was in the war just a few years earlier. So...

I kept a daily Blog on my CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY surf campaign, when I surfed every single day for 365 consecutive days. Click on the Banner above to read entries of my daily journey. There's some really interesting and true experiences
that happened during that year. Some of which are to this day, unexplainable. Some are just mind blowing. But all true.
I started on July 26th, 2010 and ended on July 26th, 2011.
Some rainy Sunday, pour yourself a cup and go through the journal.
Pay close attention to the month of May in 2011. Read that month and let me know what you think of that. Be forewarned it will change you forever.
